THE EMBEDDED SOFTWARE MARKET INTELLIGENCE PROGRAM 2009 SERVICE YEAR TRACK 1: EMBEDDED SOFTWARE ENGINEERING MARKET TECHNOLOGIES; VOLUME 2: LINUX IN THE EMBEDDED SYSTEMS MARKET published by VDC Research Group in August, 2009. This report price starts from US $ 6450.

Introduction

Abstract

As part of its Embedded Software 2009 Market Intelligence Service, VDC Research Group (VDC) is pleased to release a study covering the worldwide market for Linux employed in the development of embedded and mobile systems.

This report contains estimates for 2008 shipments of embedded Linux-related solutions and forecasts of shipments through 2011.

Estimates and forecasts of shipments are segmented by:

  • Product category;
  • Industry;
  • Geographic region; and
  • Leading vendor/supplier (based on 2008 estimates of shipments).

Research Highlights

The commercial market for embedded Linux solutions and related services is expected to maintain a strong rate of revenue growth over the forecast period.

Although we expect the annual rate of growth to remain tempered through 2010, this growth rate will remain stronger than the broader embedded software market due to continued adoption of Linux within net new projects.

The advancement and adoption of multi-core technologies is also allowing larger, more robust operating systems, such as Linux, to penetrate into applications classes previously limited to no formal or lightweight real-time operating systems.

The ultimate impact of Intel' s acquisition of Wind River System may hold the greatest prospects of significantly effecting the fortunes of market participants, in addition to those of their partners and customers.

Report Scope

This study covers the worldwide market for Linux employed the development of embedded and mobile systems. Specifically, our research efforts focused on the markets for:

Commercial Linux distributions;

  • Microkernel and operating system virtualization solutions executing on the target device/system where Linux would execute as a guest operating system;
  • Software development tools used to develop Linux-based embedded systems that are closely associated with development of the operating system; and
  • Maintenance, support, and professional services related to the above products.

Specifically excluded from this analysis are:

  • Operating system-agnostic development tools employed in the development of Linux-based systems that are not highly dependent on the OS being used. These tools would include systems and software modeling tools, test automation tools, application lifecycle management tools, and other OS-agnostic solutions;
  • Middleware, application platforms, application software, and other stand-alone software designed to run on embedded Linux operating systems, as well as any application-specific tools designed to create this software; and
  • Embedded Linux distributions incorporated as part of a larger hardware- and software-based system whereby the entire device/system/component is sold as a bundled solution.

Geographic Regions

  • The Americas
    • North America (i.e., Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.)
    • Central America (i.e., Panama, Costa Rica, etc.)
    • South America (i.e., Argentina, Brazil, Chile, etc.)
  • EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa)
  • Western Europe (i.e., U.K, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, etc.)
  • Eastern Europe including Russia (i.e., Poland, Czech Republic, etc.)
  • Middle East excluding India/Pakistan (i.e., Israel, Turkey, etc.)
  • Africa (i.e., South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, etc.)
  • Asia-Pacific
    • Asia excluding Russia and including India/Pakistan (i.e., Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, etc.)
    • Southeast Asia (i.e., Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, etc.)
    • Australia/Oceana (i.e., Australia, New Zealand, etc.)
