Introduction

Abstract

Research Summary

This study, part of VDC Research Group' s 2009 Embedded Software Market Intelligence Program covers the worldwide market for proprietary language- and standards-based software and system modeling tools and related services employed in the development of embedded systems including:

  • Standard language-based modeling tools
  • Proprietary language-based modeling tools

For the senior executives working in this market, the full report addresses:

  • The important trends, drivers and inhibitors affecting the commercial market for embedded software and system modeling tools;
  • Which vertical markets and geographic regions have the most potential to generate future revenue growth;
  • The dynamics within the competitive landscape; and
  • How modeling tool vendors can more effectively position their solutions given current and expected market conditions.

Research Highlights

Market Estimates & Forecasts: Multi-core processor adoption is finally demonstrating year-over-year growth, with initial 2009 results showing usage of multi-core processors up 4% and usage of multi-core and multiprocessor architectures up 5% compared to 2008 results. As anticipated, the expected use of single processors continues to forecast substantial decreases in favor of multi-core and multiprocessor architectures. Engineers will continue to look for new development tools and methodologies to address the added complexity wrought by multi-core processors and that hold the promise of easing the migration legacy software assets to the new processing platforms.

After posting a double-digit rate of growth from 2007 to 2008, revenue from the Asia-Pacific will finish 2009 down 7%. While the Japanese market remains strong overall, the softness in the Japanese auto industry - combined with the already conservative nature of corporate spending typical within the region - has limited growth. The broader Asia-Pacific region, however, will continue to generate the highest growth over the forecast period as the developing Chinese and Indian markets provide growth to counter the slumping Japanese market.
