The country is a fairly new player in the mining sector, starting commercial production just under a decade ago. Its first mine was the Taparko gold mine (owned by Nordgold) which started operating in 2005. Since then, Burkina Faso has seen its mining sector boom and overtake cotton as the main industry. Today, the country is home to seven operational gold mines, one zinc mine and a phosphate operation and a manganese project is currently under development. There is potential for, amongst other things, gold, silver, diamonds, bauxite, antimony, copper and uranium production.

The mining sector faces numerous challenges. Burkina Faso is a landlocked country and lacks the necessary infrastructure to transport bulk raw materials. The country has a lower working age population than the West African region as a whole, in part a result of a relatively low life expectancy rate and poor healthcare. Water prices are among the highest in Africa and the country has an unreliable, expensive electricity supply.

Nonetheless there are considerable opportunities for Burkina Faso. The country will see its population increase by 250% by 2050, and see a large workforce emerge. Energy and infrastructure projects are being developed and there is a healthy appetite to grow and diversify the fledgling mining sector.

The sector will await the outcome of recent political turmoil and the installation of a new government which will be charged with developing the sector, and the wider economy. Roskill's new African Mining Report on Burkina Faso provides a detailed, up-to-date, overview of the mining industry in the country.
