About Our Data

TeleGeography surveys service providers that offer MPLS-based layer 3 IP VPN services that are targeted at mid-market/enterprise customers. These surveyed operators provide services in major business capitals across Europe, Asia, North America, Africa, and Latin America.

Service providers fill out pricing tables for their network VPN services. These tables present monthly recurring charges for capacities between 128 Kbps and 10 Gbps for VPN services. Prices go back to 2006. Carriers participate on an anonymous basis.

Geographic coverage varies significantly by time and capacity-and continues to evolve. Currently, there are more than 160 cities in over 80 countries represented in the database that are actively tracked. App subscribers also gain access to our enterprise market summary-a deep dive into the landscape of wide area network pricing and trends.

Using This App

  • Carrier Postings: VPN pricing is reported at the individual carrier price quote level by city, port capacity (Mbps), and class of service. Individual providers remain anonymous in the carrier postings, but are identified by a unique three-letter code throughout the dataset.
  • Statistical Summary: Prices are presented both by individual port and statistical summary. The statistical summary consists of the minimum, median, average, and maximum of all prices recorded for each city/capacity/CoS combination within each quarter.

When changes in carrier participation disrupt the continuity of summary statistics, TeleGeography may carry over values from the previous or subsequent quarter. This lends consistency to the statistical data over time, but may generate quarters for which the statistical summary does not reflect individual carrier data.
