The global hydrogen generator market was valued at $1.3 billion in 2020, and is projected to reach $2.2 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 5.8% from 2021 to 2030.
Hydrogen generator is a machine that produces hydrogen from water and fossil fuels using various processes such as steam reforming and electrolysis. Hydrogen generators are basically of 2 types; onsite and portable. On site hydrogen generator is a medium and large-scale variety of equipment, which create generates hydrogen from various raw materials. The onsite hydrogen generator is primarily constructed to produce a huge volume of hydrogen fuels for various industrial and commercial uses such as automobile, energy, medical, pharmaceutical, and food & beverages packing. Portable hydrogen generator is a small-scale portable device mostly used for household such as for laptops, smart phones, lighting, and various camping equipment.
Various technological ways such as steam methane reforming, partial oxidation of oil, coal gasification, and water electrolysis are used to produce hydrogen. Most of the hydrogen is produced in oil refineries and in manufacturing of fertilizers. The most economical method is from fossil fuel reforming, however, it does not have any climate benefits as greenhouse gases are emitted in the process. Hydrogen can be produced from water through electrolysis using renewable energy resources such as solar power and onshore and offshore wind power. Many organizations are investing in production of green hydrogen. For instance, in 2019, Dutch paints and Azko Nobel, a chemical maker and Gasunie a gas network operator announced a plan to build Europe's largest green hydrogen production plant.
The initial investment cost of hydrogen generator is huge as most of components of hydrogen generators are available only from big companies. However, the U.S. Department of Energy supports research and development of wide variety of technologies to produce hydrogen more economically and with zero-carbon emissions. Department of Energy (DOE's) hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are focused on developing technologies that can produce hydrogen at $2/kg by 2025 and $1/kg by 2030 through zero-carbon pathways.
The global hydrogen generator market is segmented on the basis of product type, process, capacity, application, and region.
