The overhead camshaft (OHC) is a camshaft head variation in which each row of intake and exhaust valves is operated by a shaft. To align all valves, this approach eliminates nearly all intermediary components between the camshaft and the valve. This enables the engine to run more quickly and with less mechanical noise. Only for each row of cylinders can the notion of a double shaft be imagined. For example, a V- engine with one camshaft per row of cylinders is considered a single shaft, although having two camshafts in total.

Variable valve timing (VVT) is a modern engine technology that adjusts the timing of valve openings and closings independently of crankshaft position to create greater and broader torque and power curves vs. RPM. Because one cam controls the intake valves and the other controls the exhaust valves, the VVT can independently optimize each valve set for ideal flow rates of cold intake air at low pressure and hot exhaust gases at high pressures as the engine speeds up and increases load.
