Key View:

3G continues its rapid decline as 4G roll-outs by the top three operators and the proliferation of locally-made smartphones fuel growth. However, opportunities to grow service revenues through 4G subscription expansion are slimming as only late-adopters, which generally utilise only basic, low-value services, remain on legacy connections; 4G subscriptions made up nearly 75% of the mobile market as of Q318. We believe that operators will gradually scale down on 2G networks in all but the most rural of areas to save on operational expenditure and will likely double-down on 4G marketing efforts, with promotions and free phones to be offered to migrate all connections to 4G to facilitate a complete 2G network shut-off. However, these low-value subscribers will be ARPU-dilutive as they are unlikely to adopt premium data services. However, commercialisation of 5G networks will be a future boon to revenues.
