Thailand Telecommunications Q4 2019

Key View:

Thailand's mobile market is already saturated, meaning that growth will only be buoyed largely by tourist SIMs, which are deactivated periodically. Maturity and a slow but gradual shift away from multi-SIM ownership and towards low-cost postpaid services form our core view of the mobile segment. Competition to migrate 3G subscribers to 4G will persist in the near term, incurring higher costs for marketing expenses and handset subsidies.

Wireline voice connections are in constant decline, although the wireline broadband market will see growth as ISPs commit to fibrerisation. Recently-concluded spectrum auctions will allow operators to develop 4G coverage to audiences in rural areas, although the lack of a clear spectrum roadmap could hinder operators' plans to invest into emerging technologies, namely 5G.
