An electric vehicle charging station is equipment that connects an electric vehicle (EV) to a source of electricity to recharge electric cars, neighborhood electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Germany's government wants to reduce emissions of harmful gases related to transport. As set out in the government's Climate Protection Plan 2050, by 2030 Germany must reduce emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), in transport around 40%. German government is committed to promoting electric vehicles (EVs) and extending the public and private charger networks in order to achieve this goal. By 2030, the government goal is to have 5 to 10 million EV on the road and a total of 1 million charging points available. Germany has the potential of a large EV charging station market. At present there are 45000 publically available charging stations. The country will able to meet the high demand of a growing number of BEVs and PHEVs with a wide range of body types, styles, ranges, and charging capacities in future. Home charging availability is also evolving. In future the public charging will be expanding because earlier only some people of Germany switched to the EV but now due to increase in the demand of EV the market of public charging will also expand.

On the basis of type market is divided into two main type slow chargers and fast chargers. By more than 80% of the market share slow charger is a leading charger. While, fast charger is the fastest growing segment in value market share and expected to capture higher market share in forecast period.

On the basis of level there are main three types of EV charging station that are Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 charging. Level 1 is the slowest type of charging equipment and is plug directly into a standard 120 volt (V) AC outlet supplying an average power output of 1.3 kW to 2.4 kW. This power output is equivalent to 3-5 miles of EV range per hour. A level 2 charger allows charging of an electric car 5 to 7 times faster for a full-electric car or up to 3 times faster for a plug-in hybrid compared to a level 1 charger. This would mean to maximize the use of EV and reduce stopping to charge at public charging stations. Level 1 and Level 2 are generally slow and alternating current charger (AC) but the Level 3 charging is broken into Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC). Level 3 charging is the fastest type of charging available and can recharge an EV at a rate of 3 to 20 miles of range per minute. If the level is higher than it provides more power to the EV and also charges faster. Level 1 charging is the most widely used option to charge EV's.

On the basis of application type of charging market, the market is divided into public and private charging. Private charging is characterized by a smaller number of EVs that are charging on the private network behind the grid connection point/energy meter and Public charging stations are typically found street-side or at retail shopping centre, government facilities, and other parking areas. For future use, public charging station is very important for the large population of Germany. For the development of the public charging station government and private sector is providing fund for further development of the market. Adoption of charging station in private places is rapidly increasing as growth in sales of electric vehicle rises. The private segment leads the charging stations in Germany with over 50% market share while public charging stations is on the rise. The major factor driving the growth of the market is government funding and backing with extended support. The increased sales of batteries and other equipments used in EV also led to the growth of the EV charging station market. Policies and regulations are set by government on basis of electricity provided for charging and also rules and regulations for billing and tariff.

There are various factors responsible for growth of electric vehicle charging market in Germany, such as increase in sales of electric vehicle, environment awareness among people and various government incentives towards clean energy. Sales of EV mostly affected during COVID-19 situation and its related automotive industry.
