Description

Real-World Patient Journey Type 2 Diabetes in the Inpatient and Emergency Departments

Using an electronic health record (EHR) database with information collected from about 750 hospitals across the US, we evaluated overall trends in the diagnosis, treatment, costs, and outcomes associated with the hospitalizations of Type 2 Diabetes patients. We conducted an in-depth analysis across both inpatient visits (n = 1.14 million patients) and emergency department visits (n = 0.89 million patients) from 2009 to 2016.

In 2016, US healthcare spending surpassed $3.3 trillion with nearly 1/3 ($1.1 trillion) spent on hospitalizations. In 2014, an estimated 14.6 million emergency department discharges (~10.6% of all emergency department discharges) and 7.8 million inpatient discharges (~22% of all inpatient discharges) involved type 2 diabetes patients.

In the electronic health record used for this analysis, type 2 diabetes patients contributed approximately 0.36 million inpatient stays in 2016, or ~19% of all hospital stays in 2016. They account for 0.32million emergency department visits per year, or ~6% of all emergency visits in 2016.
