The European bathroom market is considered a mature market, which experienced solid growth rates during the early to mid-2000s. However, demand for almost all bathroom products declined strongly in Europe following the effects of the economic crisis of 2008/2009. The bathroom market recovered significantly faster in Eastern Europe than in Western Europe, with the latter continuing to show drop in sales demand up to 2015.Indeed, the Eastern European market never suffered the dramatic decline in sales compared to Western Europe.
Similar to developments seen in previous years, demand for bathroom and kitchen equipment continued to slow down further. Reduced growth was particularly witnessed in Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Turkey. Housing RMI demand continued to be the main market drivers, although new build demand positively affected growth rates in certain countries, most notably Spain. Indeed, demand for bathroom equipment is nowadays mostly driven by replacement demand, although this is different per product group as well as per country. The housing RMI sector developed favourably across both regions, Eastern and Western Europe, during 2018.
