Biofeedback is an evidence-based methodology to improve personal awareness and control over body and mind. Biofeedback combines the values of complementary and alternative medicine with modern scientific medicine. The biofeedback paradigm provides feedback about a biologic processes. This feedback enables the individual to become aware of their physical functional process and gain conscious control over the anxious functions. Biofeedback uses electronic instruments to monitor and provide feedback about physiological responses.
Biofeedback is often aimed at changing habitual reactions to stress that can cause pain or disease. Feedback of physical responses such as skin temperature and muscle tension provide information to help patients achieve a relaxed state. The feedback signal may also act as a kind of reward for reducing tension.
Patients who are suffering from a disease that has a major stress component can also benefit from using a psychophysiological psychotherapy model of learning. In this model, it is necessary to understand the patient as an individual. Stress management and other psychotherapeutic interventions may be used in combination with biofeedback training in order to make patients aware of how the stress in their lives has an effect on physiology.
The biofeedback measurement instrument market is expected to witness significant growth during the forecast period owing to the increasing number of neurological disorders. According to the Global Burden of Disease Study, in 2005, a population-based annual stroke incidence in India was around 89/100,000 which is projected to increase to 91/100,000 in 2015 and to 98/100,000 by 2030. Similarly, according to the World Alzheimer Report of 2015 published by Alzheimer's disease International (ADI), there were nearly 9.9 million new cases of dementia in 2015 across the globe, and 46.8 million people were living with dementia in 2015 worldwide. The World Alzheimer Report 2015, also estimates that the number of cases will reach around 74.7 million by 2030 and 131.5 million by 2050.
Product approvals by regulatory authorities are expected to drive growth of biofeedback measurement instrument market during the forecast period. For instance, in August 2017, Siemens Healthineers received CE approval for the 7 Tesla magnetic resonance (MR) scanner Magnetom Terra, an ultra-high-field MR scanner for neurological and musculoskeletal examinations. Moreover, in June 2018, Royal Philips received the 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Ingenia Elition 3.0T MR solution and two clinical End Users, Philips Compressed SENSE and 3D APT. This solution helps clinicians to perform examination up to 50% faster, increase diagnostic efficacy, and enhance the patients' experience.
Market players are focused on launching technologically advanced products in the market, which is expected to fuel the market growth during the forecast period. For instance, in November 2018, GE Healthcare launched Edison platform with artificial intelligent End Users at Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). This novel platform with AI apps will support hospitals to develop algorithms and manage data for imaging and precision medicine. These apps include the AIRx, tool for MRI brain scanning and others.
