Market Overview

The Vietnam & Philippines mechanical ventilator market size was valued US$ XX million in 2021 and is estimated to reach US$ XX million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period (2022-2029).

The mechanical ventilator is an artificial breathing device used by patients who cannot breathe naturally due to acute medical conditions. It is a life support system that helps patients breathe when they cannot maintain adequate alveolar ventilation. A patient is connected to a ventilator through an endotracheal tube directly applied to a patient's airway or NIV face mask.

Ventilators are often used during surgery when the patient is given anesthesia; respirators help to put patients to sleep without interrupting normal breathing. It also diagnoses airway resistance and irregular functioning of the respiratory system. The failure of ventilators may result in death, so it is classed as a life-critical system and should be highly reliable.

Market Dynamics

Significant drivers driving the mechanical ventilator market include increased COPD incidence, growth in the geriatric population, technological innovations, advancements in portability and design, and supportive government funding.

Rising incidence of COPD and various new technological advancements are expected to drive market growth.

The Vietnam & Philippines mechanical ventilator market is growing due to several factors such as rising demand for ventilators in ambulatory centres and hospitals due to increasing prevalence of chronic disorders where this device is used majorly among patients who have had suffered a spinal cord injury, stroke, or neuromuscular disorder or are suffering from a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), apnea, acute lung injury, or hypoxemia, technological innovations and supportive government funding are some of them.

According to the Global Alliance for Chronic Disease, more than 12.9% of the Vietnamese population suffers from COPD and Asthma, and four out of 5 men in Vietnam have a history of smoking, making the lungs more susceptible to choric disease. There is a nation that is combating COPD and Asthma apart from Vietnam. The Philippines is one such nation, followed by other lung diseases. Increasing cases of COPD, bronchitis, and asthma are due to an increase in air pollution levels. WHO data states that 9 out of 10 people are breathing air containing a high concentration of pollutants.

According to the World Health Organization, in Vietnam, COPD cases account for more than 7.1% of the male population aged 40 and above and 1.9% of females within the said age range.

According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, the Vietnam Population aged 65 years or over in thousands around be 7,286, which is expected to reach 12,446 by 2030. Thus, the geriatric population is associated with many respiratory severe disorders that require continuous long-term ventilation.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pulmonary embolism, barotrauma, and pulmonary edema are among the complications that can occur in patients receiving mechanical ventilation; such complications can lead to longer duration of mechanical ventilation, longer stays in the ICU and hospital, increased healthcare costs, and increased risk of disability and death. Mortality in patients with acute lung injury on mechanical ventilation has been estimated to range from 24% in persons 15-19 years of age to 60% for patients 85 years and older.

High development cost and risk associated with ventilation procedures are expected to hamper the market growth.

The tight budgetary constraints faced by ventilator manufacturers and healthcare service providers and risks associated with mechanical ventilation procedures like the entry of bacteria into the lungs via the endotracheal tube causing pneumonia or injury of the lung are restricting the growth of this market.

Industry Analysis

The Vietnam & Philippines mechanical ventilator market provides in-depth analysis of the market based on various industry factors such as Porter's Five Forces, Regulatory Analysis, Supply Chain Analysis, Reimbursement Policies, Technological Advancements & Key Developments and Comparative Scenario.

Segment Analysis

Product type segment is expected to hold the largest market share in Vietnam & Philippines mechanical ventilator market

The Vietnam & Philippines mechanical ventilator market is segmented on product type as stationery and transport/portable ventilator, where portable ventilators are highly demanded as it is easy to carry. Based on age group as intensive/critical care and neonatal ventilator, neonatal is expected to grow with highest CAGR. By interface as a non-invasive and invasive ventilator where invasive is going to drive the growth of market. By mode as combined mode, volume mode, and pressure mode ventilator. By end-user as hospitals, clinics. Ambulatory care and home care where hospitals are expected to increase the market and by region.

Mechanical ventilation is an indispensable, life-saving therapy for patients with critical illness and respiratory failure. Recently, as the COVID-19 outbreaks, the demand for more ventilators is rising rapidly in developing countries like the Philippines and Vietnam.

According to Draeger, a primary key player in the mechanical ventilator market, transport/portable mechanical ventilators held largest market share and are expected to increase with highest CAGR by 2029. This is due to an increased usage of portable ventilators in hospitals to provide continuous and faster care to patients before they arrive at the premises.

Portable ventilators prompt the patients to adopt home care, thus increasing the patient's safety and comfort. For instance, in Jan 2021, Swasth Vayu- non-invasive airway pressure ventilator was developed by CSIR-NAL.

Neonatal care is also expected to witness a rise in market share by 2029. According to WHO, every year, an estimated 10.2% of babies are born preterm in Vietnam, and the numbers are rising; these babies need oxygen therapy immediately after birth

Geographical Analysis

Vietnam region holds the largest market share in the Vietnam & Philippines mechanical ventilator market

By region, the mechanical ventilator market is segmented into Vietnam and Philippines. Among both the regions, Vietnam dominated the mechanical ventilator market due to high incidence of surgeries and increase in chronic respiratory diseases. Vietnam has one of the best beds-to-inhabitants ratios compared to its neighbours, falling only behind Singapore, which has an average of 27 to 10,000. Hospitals in major cities in Vietnam are at 80% occupancy.

Vietnamese hospitals have been exceeding the 80% threshold occupancy rate set by the World Health Organisation. In many developing countries such as the Philippines, there is an expected 1 ventilator per 10 ICU beds due to the prohibitive cost of acquiring a ventilator and the remoteness of the various spare parts of the same. These factors pose a challenge for small hospitals to acquire more units. For instance, in 2019, according to the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (PCHRD-DOST), 50 percent of ICU patients needed a ventilator.

A specialized team of few from various fields has come up with a less costly ventilator for patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) to address its scarcity, leading to an unwanted increase in mortality rates and the projected to cost 40 percent lower than other portable ventilators in the market. The locally designed portable ventilator called Ginhawa, also known as ReliefVent, has an inexpensive ventilator to tackle the current crises.

According to the Department of Health record, on March 2020, there are 84 available mechanical ventilators in hospitals around Metro Manila. Of which 39 are in public hospitals. There are likewise 485 available ventilators outside the capital region. Thus, the need for a ventilator is at a surge in the Philippines. Meanwhile, research associates from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine aim to develop a prototype respirator for the local frontline.

According to Vietnam's government, the private sector has taken a front hand to focus and manufacturing medical supplies, helping the health system avoid shortages of personal protective equipment and ventilators. The growing awareness regarding the mechanical ventilator shall fuel the market growth over the forecasted period.

Competitive Landscape

The mechanical ventilator market is highly competitive with the presence of several international and local market players. Product diversification, cost-effective products, revenue generation, and opportunities intensify the market competition. Dreager, Smith's Medical, Medtronic, Plc., Philips Respironics, Becton Dickinson and Company, Hamilton Medical, Vingroup, An Phuc Trading & Technology Co., Ltd, Kromek Group plc, Metran Co Ltd are the leading companies with a significant market share.

Companies are using technological advancement, product diversification, novel product development, and market expansion strategies. The companies enter into collaborations, mergers, strategic partnerships, and acquisitions to increase the demand for mechanical ventilators and their expansion across the globe. For instance, in Jun 2020, Medtronic plc and Foxconn Industrial Internet, announced their partnership as Foxconn successfully completed Medtronic's quality and regulatory requirements that were crucial to begin manufacturing of Medtronic Puritan Bennett 560 (PB560) ventilators. Medtronic and Foxconn planned to produce 10,000 PB560 ventilators in a year.

Draegerwerk started manufacturing 10,000 machines for people, according to the German government, where the hospitals had about 20,000 ventilators before the outbreak of coronavirus, which is equivalent to a year's normal production at the company. The Government of Vietnam has recently asked the Ministry of Health to work closely with domestic businesses to manufacture ventilators for hospitals across the country to treat patients infected with contagious diseases, including the COVID-19.

Private business conglomerate Vingroup, one of the largest private manufacturing companies in Vietnam, starts producing oxygen ventilators to support coronavirus patients.
