Market Overview

The Global Infusion Pumps Market is expected to grow at a high CAGR during the forecasting period (2020-2027).

Infusion pumps are medical devices used to deliver fluids, such as nutrients and medications, into the patient's body in controlled amounts. The infusion pumps have widespread use in clinical settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and in the home.

They offer several advantages over manual administration of fluids, such as delivering fluids in small quantities and delivering fluids at precisely programmed rates or automated intervals.

They deliver nutrients or medications, such as insulin or other hormones, antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and pain relievers.

Market Dynamics:

The global infusion pumps market is growing due to several factors such as the rising incidence of chronic diseases with an increasing geriatric population, growing demand for ambulatory infusion pumps, technological advancements in devices & accessories, and the increasing number of surgical procedures performed.

The rising incidences of chronic diseases is one of the major factor driving the demand for infusion pumps. In the United States, there are about six in ten live with chronic diseases, like heart disease, cancer, stroke, or diabetes. In 2017, 30.3 million US adults had diabetes. Diabetes is observed to be the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Around 630,000 Americans die from heart disease each year. Coronary heart disorder is the most common type of heart disease, killing about 366,000 people in 2015. In 2017, an estimated 86% of deaths and 77% of the European region's disease burden were due to non-communicable diseases.

However, stringent regulations, product recalls, and the rising adoption of refurbished infusion pumps hinder the growth of the market. For instance, on March 6th, 2020, BD recalled Alaris System infusion pumps. According to the FDA, this has been identified as the Class I recall, one of the most serious types of recall. The use of these devices may cause serious injuries or death. BD/CareFusion 303 recalls the Alaris Infusion Pump System and Modules due to multiple system errors, software errors, and use-related errors.

Segmentation Analysis:-

By product, the infusion pumps market is segmented into pumps & devices & accessories & consumables.

The pumps & devices are further segmented into implantable infusion pumps, insulin infusion pumps, syringe infusion pumps, volumetric infusion pumps, ambulatory infusion pumps, enteral infusion pumps, disposable infusion pumps, chemotherapy infusion pumps, and patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pumps.

The insulin infusion pumps segment is estimated to grow at the fastest CAGR during the forecast period. The insulin pump provides continuous delivery of short-acting insulin all day long. The insulin pump substitutes the need for long-acting insulin. Insulin pump also replaces the need for multiple daily injections with a continuous insulin infusion and improves your blood sugar levels. Insulin infusions pumps are made of Teflon or steel and attach to your skin with an adhesive patch. The pump's underside is a short, thin tube (cannula) inserted in the skin with a small needle that is housed within the cannula to deliver insulin into a layer of fatty tissue.

The increasing regulatory approvals from the national governing bodies for insulin infusion pumps drive the global drug delivery infusion system market. In January 2018, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved Eli Lilly and Company's Humulin R U-500 KwikPen(insulin human injection) 500 units/mL, a pre-filled device containing Humulin R U-500, a highly concentrated formulation of insulin. This insulin is used to treat high blood sugar in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who need more than 200 units per day.

In August 2018, Roche received CE Mark for the Accu-Chek Solo insulin patch pump, and wireless touchscreen handheld has received safety approval to introduce in Europe. Accu-Chek Solo is a tubeless insulin pump worn as a patch directly on the body and controlled from a wireless handheld, enabling discreet insulin delivery. However, the Accu-Chek Solo insulin patch pump will be available in Austria, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK; the product will be available to the rest of the European countries in 2019. Roche is planning to work with the FDA to bring the pump to the US in 2019.

Based on application, the infusion pumps market is segmented into diabetes, gastroenterology, chemotherapy/oncology, analgesia/pain management, hematology, pediatrics/neonatology, and others.

Among these, the diabetes segment is estimated to grow at the highest CAGR over the forecast period, owing to the rising prevalence of diabetes and increasing demand for insulin pumps to manage diabetes in-home care.

The launch of a new product for diabetes is driving the global drug delivery infusion system market. For instance, in August 2018, Tandem Diabetes Care Inc., a medical device company and manufacturer of the only touchscreen insulin pumps available in the United States, have received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval and commercial launch of t: slim X2 Insulin Pump with Dexcom G5 Mobile continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) integration, these insulin pumps let users make treatment decisions without pricking their finger. The t: slim X2 Pump is designed for diabetes patients

Geographical Analysis:-

North America is dominating the global infusion pumps market accounted for the largest market share in 2018, owing to the high adoption of specialty infusion pumps to treat chronic diseases, increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, rising geriatric population, and the presence of many large hospitals in the region.

The huge number of insulin therapy in Canada is driving the North American drug delivery infusion system market. In 2017, the approximately 2.6 million diabetics in Canada, about 280,000 were type 1 diabetic, and about 600,000 are type 2 diabetics on insulin therapy.

The geographical expansion of leading manufacturers of injection and infusion systems drives the North American drug delivery infusion system market.

In March 2018, Ypsomed, a leading developer and manufacturer of injection and infusion systems, introduced its first subsidiary in North America, Canada. Ypsomed is also opening its sales for mylife YpsoPump in Canada.

The infusion system's launch is a key factor driving the North American drug delivery infusion system market. For instance, in January 2018, Saskatchewan has received approval for the implementation of Smart IV Pumps in Canada. The new Hospira Plum 360 IV pumps deliver fluids, medications, and parental nutrition to patients.
