Market Overview:

Espresso coffee is a type of coffee that is generally consumed as a coffee shot. Apart from that, espresso coffee can also be consumed with the combination of milk, cream, chocolate and other flavors. Originated in Italy, espresso coffee is prepared by processing ground coffee beans by a small amount of boiling water at high pressure. Rising personal disposable income, shifting tastes and preferences, and increasing adoption of western lifestyle are the major factors fostering the growth of espresso coffee market. Rising popularity of espresso coffee globally and growth in the number of cafes and restaurants in the developing economies are some other factors acting as market growth determinants. The global espresso coffee market valued USD YY million in 2020 and is estimated to reach USD YY million by 2028, growing at a CAGR of YY%.

Market Dynamics:

Increasing demand for espresso coffee owing to its health benefits

Espresso is considered healthier than drip coffee because a coffee filter is not needed to make one. The espresso-making process allows coffee's natural oils, and minerals to flow into the coffee. Espressos, in particular, contain antioxidants that boost the immune system. Espresso shots can even reduce the risk of heart diseases and stroke, especially for people who are obese. Diabetes can also be avoided by consuming espresso coffee. In one study, the chance of getting Type 2 diabetes fell down by 54% for men and 30% for women who drank several cups of coffee a day. Moreover, espressos help prevent inflammation. That makes it an ideal candidate for dealing with indigestion. It soothes a bloated stomach by stimulating the digestive process. According to some studies, caffeine can prevent the early onset of ageing. Furthermore, the antioxidants in espresso have the potential to remove toxin build-up in the liver. This, in turn, slows down the rate of ageing. Drinking espressos might help in dealing with age-related illnesses better. For example, coffee intake was found to decrease the risk of severe depression in middle-aged men. Psychology Today explains that the caffeine in espresso can help fight depression and boost mood. Research studies over long periods of time have shown that those who regularly drink espresso and other caffeinated drinks are at a significantly lower risk of being afflicted by Alzheimer's, dementia, and even Parkinson's disease. Espressos clearly have to lead to various health benefits if consumed in just the right amount, and hence driving the market growth.

Market Segmentation

Arabica and Robusta beans are widely used owing to their high caffeine content

On the basis of type of beans, the espresso coffee market is segmented into Arabica and Robusta. Despite containing less caffeine than Robusta, Arabica beans are often considered superior in taste. Robusta contains 2.7% caffeine, which is almost double of 1.5% of arabica. Also, arabica type is pleasant in taste and contains almost 60% lipid and almost twice concentration of sugar than Robusta owing to which people prefer arabica over Robusta. According to the International Coffee Organization, more than 60 per cent of world coffee production comes from Arabica cultivators, where Brazil is one of the leading producers in the world. In 2020/21, worldwide Arabica coffee production amounted to about 102.1 million 60-kilogram bags. In the twelve months ending June 2021, exports of Arabica totaled 82.80 million bags compared to 79.58 million bags in 2020; whereas Robusta exports amounted to 46.93 million bags compared to 49.43 million bags.

Europe dominates the Espresso coffee market in terms of consumption due to increasing demand and easy availability of various types of coffee. Europe is a large coffee market, accounting for about one-third of global consumption. Due to busy lifestyles and increasing per capita income, people prefer to take away products consumed anywhere. According to data from the International Trade Centre, Europe accounted for about 84% of the total roasted export volume in 2018, amounting to an estimated 964 thousand tonnes. In general, Italy imports a relatively large share of Robusta varieties, which are used as a basis for espresso blends. European market is mainly dominated by a few large roasting and grinding companies, namely Nestle, Jacobs Douwe Egberts (of JAB Holding Company) and Lavazza. The top-10 roasters in the world are responsible for roasting 35% of the world's coffee. Acquisitions by these three companies have accelerated in the last 10 years; from 2012 to 2018, JAB Holding Company acquired over 30 brands.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 has severely affected the international trade. Coffee processing is one of the most affected food and beverage sectors globally due to pandemic. It has highly affected the demand of the espresso coffee market as demand and supply of various coffee stringent government rules such as lockdown has been implemented for maintaining social distancing in hotels, bars and restaurants.
