The Subcommittee on Veterinary Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (VAST) of the Clinical Laboratory and Standards Institute (CLSI) has developed specific test methods and interpretive criteria for veterinary pathogens. This knowledge has enabled veterinarians to treat animal diseases more effectively, protecting animal welfare and human food security. Furthermore, the availability of standardized veterinary pathogen test methods has enabled the development of antimicrobial surveillance programs to detect the emergence of resistance among veterinary pathogens. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests are used to determine which antibiotics a specific bacteria or fungus is susceptible to. Most of the time, this testing is used in conjunction with a Gram stain and culture, which are obtained much faster. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests can help doctors decide which drugs to use and how much to give to patients with difficult-to-treat infections. The growing amount of antimicrobials used in food animals is expected to drive market growth. For instance, According to the OECD, the amount of antimicrobials used in food animals will rise from 63,151 tonnes to 105 596 tonnes globally by 2030. 1 kg of beef requires approximately 45mg of antimicrobials. One of the primary disadvantages of traditional or manual veterinary antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods (such as agar dilution, chromogenic agar method, disc diffusion, and micro-broth dilution) is the time required to obtain results, ranging from 24 to 48 hours. Automated veterinary antimicrobial susceptibility testing systems provide faster results with higher accuracy and fewer opportunities for human error. However, due to their high cost, the adoption of these systems in veterinary laboratories is limited, particularly in developing countries. One of the primary reasons for low adoption in both developed and developing countries is the high cost of these diagnostic tests. Veterinary diagnostic laboratories do not prefer to invest in expensive systems because the volumes of veterinary samples received for testing are generally small.
