Market Overview

The global fumed silica market size was worth US$ XX million in 2021 and is estimated to reach US$ XX million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period (2022-2029).

Fumed silica is an amorphous form of silicon dioxide fused into branched and chainlike, three-dimensional secondary particles that then agglomerate into tertiary particles. It is called fumed silica as it is produced in the flame formed by the pyrolysis of silicon tetrachloride vaporized at 1500℃.

The three-dimensional structure of fumed silica gives it viscosity increasing and thixotropic properties. It, therefore, finds a lot of applications as a thickener and anti-caking agent. Fumed Silica is used for various pharmaceutical and industrial applications such as paints, coatings and pigments. Fumed silica is used in the building and construction industry as sealants and additives

Market Dynamics

The demand for fumed silica is mainly driven by the rising demand from end-user. It is the most important driver for the market. The health hazards of fumed silica are a key factor in limiting the growth of this market.

Increasing demand from end-user

Fumed silica has wide-ranging industrial engineering applications. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry as an anti-caking agent in tablets and capsules and as a thickener for pharmaceutical oils. It is also being used as a glidant for solid dosage drugs. Fumed silica is used as sealants and additives in the building and construction industry.

The properties of fumed silica impart various advantages to paints and coatings, such as great viscosity and elasticity, which improves surface coverage. When added to sealants, fumed silica shows thixotropic behavior and gives sag-specific properties for successful practical application. It also provides reinforcement and mechanic properties to sealants. The properties cannot be achieved by any other additive and hence fumed silica has an advantage in the sealants market and enjoys near-total domination.

Health hazards due to widespread use of fumed silica

Governments globally have introduced numerous rules and regulations regarding the usage of fumed silica. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in U.S. has restricted fumed silica for manufacturing. Fumed silica can create various health hazards to the workers of various industries and the people using the product in which fumed silica is used. It can cause health problems such as eye irritation in extreme contact and eye damage due to acute exposure.

Chronic exposure can cause flu-like illnesses, such as headaches, fever, chills, aches, coughing and chest tightness. Fibrosis is one chronic effect due to fumed silica which can cause lung damage. Biological research is underway to find the effects of fumed silica on living beings. The synthetic fumed silica is made without contamination of crystalline silica, but nowadays, contamination of crystalline silica takes place, which makes fumed silica more vulnerable to health hazards and risks for pulmonary diseases such as silicosis, tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Several regulations are made to use to limit quantities of fumed silica used in various applications. The health hazards of widespread use of fumed silica are a key challenge for the growth of this market.

COVID-19 impact analysis

The global fumed silica market experienced uneven impacts on value chains is due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Automotive and construction applications saw steep declines since government-imposed lockdowns and restrictions brought a prolonged halt to manufacturing and construction activities globally. Sanitary and pharmaceutical applications saw robust growth. The main reason behind the growth was increased awareness about public hygiene and rise in healthcare-related activities due to the pandemic.

End-use products such as those used in vaccine storage and pharmaceuticals saw a rise in demand, whereas paints, additives and sealants used for main building and construction applications saw relatively steep declines. Many fumed silica producers chemical companies adapted their existing plans to meet demand from pharmaceutical and medical sectors to protect revenue streams.

The short-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been relatively mild for the industry. Major fumed silica producing companies have cut production and capital expenditure in response to the decreased demand due to the pandemic. The pandemic will have a negligible impact on the medium to long-term growth of the global fumed silica market since companies are expected to gradually ramp up production as economic activity and demand returns to pre-pandemic levels. The demand for fumed silica remains strong and is expected to grow gradually in the coming years.

Segment Analysis

The global fumed silica market is segmented into type, application, end-user and region. The fumed silica market is segmented into automotive and transportation, building and construction, electrical and electronics, food and beverages, pharmaceutical and others based on industry.

Building & construction is leading in the industry segmentation of the fumed silica market. Fumed silica has a wide range of applications in the building and construction industry, including pipes, ducts, electrical wiring within building walls and ceilings, architectural coatings, basements, glazing frames, ceiling joints, floors, roofs, external walls, cladding, retaining walls, bathroom components and fixtures, corrosion-resistant tanks, cultured marble, panels for floor and walls, sanitary-ware and tanks.

Geographical Analysis
