Market Overview

The global temporomandibular joint implants market size was valued at US$ XX million in 2021 and is estimated to reach US$ XX million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of XX % during the forecast period (2022-2029).

Implants for the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are medical devices used to replace part or all the jaw. The primary goal of these joints is to restore normal temporomandibular joint function, such as mouth opening and closing and to chew.

Market Dynamics

The factors influencing the global temporomandibular joint implants market are the increasing technological advancements and the growing number of oral and maxillofacial surgeries.

The increasing technological advancements are expected to drive the market growth

The TMJ (temporal mandibular joint) is a sliding hinge articulation that connects the mandible to the skull's temporal bone. It is a complicated joint because of its close association with other structures in the head. Technology advancements in TMJ research have resulted in the evolution and advancement of treatment options for TMD patients. The research into various management modalities will aid in the development of new and more effective TMD management options. More effective and advanced treatment options will emerge if researchers continue to investigate the causes of management failures and propose solutions. These advancements will help patients manage their TMD and improve their quality of life. To create quality TMJR devices, criteria for successful repair devices have been developed. Biocompatible materials must be used. The FDA has approved three implant materials: titanium, cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo), and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE).

Moreover, three-dimensional printing is an additive manufacturing technique that allows complex biomedical devices to be designed and manufactured at a lower cost. In this method, 3D components are created by layer-by-layer material addition rather than material removal as in traditional fabrication methods. This method of material addition makes it simple to create complex contours and intricate parts.

The problems associated with temporomandibular joint implants are expected to hamper the market growth

According to a recent study, at least 15 countries produce 21 different devices (6 Stock, 15 custom). The main restraint behind the TMJ replacement devices appears to be costly. Moreover, Antibiotic resistance is a worldwide issue. Interventions can be divided into two categories in general. There are strategies to protect existing antibiotics while also preventing the emergence and spread of new resistance. Second, strategies to revive drug development and bring new antibiotics to market are being developed. Identifying recipient risk factors, using the proper surgical technique, providing appropriate wound care, optimising the operating room environment, and providing appropriate postoperative care have all become key components in lowering the overall incidence of this complication. Heavy metal toxicity has proven to be a significant threat, with several health risks. Even though these metals have no biological function, their toxic effects persist in some form, harmful to the human body and its proper functioning.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the medical landscape significantly for both healthcare providers and patients. The unprecedented times have resulted in a significant shift in demand for elective orthopedic surgery. The state of the economy and the stock market has previously been identified as influencing public demand for elective surgical procedures. Elective procedures have never been subjected to severe and widespread restrictions as those recommended during the COVID-19 pandemic. The President of the United States declared COVID-19 a national emergency on March 13, 2020. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) issued recommendations for hospitals and surgical practices to delay all elective surgeries, non-essential medical, surgical, and dental procedures.

Segment Analysis

The mandibular component is expected to dominate the market growth in the forecast period

The mandibular component of the prosthesis is made up of two basic materials. The shaft is made of a wrought titanium alloy that contains 90 percent titanium, 6% aluminum, and 4% vanadium. This metal is extremely hard, biocompatible, and resistant to bending. The mandibular component's articulating surface is made of a wrought chrome-cobalt molybdenum alloy containing 64 percent cobalt, 28 percent chromium, 6 percent molybdenum, and 2% trace elements (nickel, iron, carbon, silicon, manganese, and nitrogen). This prosthesis' functioning surfaces have low wear, flow, and fatigue coefficients. Many of these TMJ patients have jaw and facial deformities as well. The use of a custom-made joint prosthesis allows for correction of the facial deformity and reconstruction of the TMJs all in one procedure. Based on preoperative cephalometric surgical treatment objectives, the surgeon must be able to precisely reposition the mandible on the 3-dimensional plastic model. In these cases, the custom-made prosthesis is made using the plastic model with the mandible in its new position, as described previously. All mandibular movements performed on the plastic model are accurately duplicated on anatomically mounted dental plaster models prior to surgery, from which an intermediate acrylic occlusal splint for accurate intraoperative repositioning of the mandible is constructed. The widespread use of mandibular components in total temporomandibular joint implant surgeries is expected to fuel the segment's dominant market share.

Geographical Analysis

North America region is expected to hold the largest market share in the global temporomandibular joint implants market

The region's high prevalence and rising incidence of temporomandibular joint disorders, as well as its high prevalence of oral cancer, are expected to boost the market. TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disease affects 30 million Americans, with roughly 1 million new cases diagnosed yearly. Although many of these patients can be treated with nonsurgical treatments, others will require surgery. Moreover, In the United States, for instance, the prevalence rate of temporomandibular and muscle joint disorder is estimated to be between 5% and 12%.

Competitive Landscape

With mergers, acquisitions, and product launches, the global temporomandibular joint implants market is moderately competitive. Some of the key players in the market are Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc., Ortho Baltic., Xilloc Medical B.V., AB. Dental Devices Ltd.
