Description

Market Overview

The Global Biochar Market is expected to grow at a high CAGR during the forecasting period (2020-2027).

Biochar is a porous stable solid which is rich in carbon and is produced from the carbonization of biomass. Biochar is mixed with other matter for soil amendment and other purposes. It is found naturally in soil as a result of natural vegetation or forest fires. The advantages of biochar carbon sequestration include reduction of carbon green house gases. Most of the feedstock is in the form of waste from various sectors such as agriculture, forestry, and residential, which form cheap raw material for biochar production. The market is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period because of growing applications of biochar in agricultural activities.

Market Dynamics

Advantages of biochar carbon sequestration projects and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are primary factor driving the global biochar market during forecast period. Carbon sequestration activity captures and stores carbon to prevent its release into the atmosphere. Biochar can retain carbon in the soil for a long period of time. It enhances soil fertility and stimulates plant growth. Carbon sequestration plants consume carbon from the soil for their growth. The energy generated during biochar production can be used as a substitute for carbon positive energy from fossil fuels. Biochar also reduces greenhouse gas emissions as it lowers the need for fertilizers, which results in reduced emissions of greenhouse gases from fertilizer production.

However, lack of demonstration of projects and contamination in biochar and its feedstock are hindering the growth of Biochar market globally during forecast period.

Market Segmentation

Global biochar market is segmented on the basis of feedstock into forestry waste, agriculture waste, animal manure, and others.

Forestry waste includes straw, nut shells, wood chips, tree bark, wood pellets, switch grass, noxious weeds, sawdust, hemp, and algae. Forestry waste is a viable source for generation of biochar because of its high energy conversion efficiency. Factors such as low moisture content, homogeneity of forestry waste, and other physical characteristics make it compatible with the current biochar production technology such as pyrolysis and gasification. The high concentration of centralized forestry waste around industrial wood mills or other forestry product processing plants helps minimize transportation costs. The homogeneity and consistency of forestry waste allow standardization of the manufacturing process and equipment.

Geographical Presentation

By region, the global biochar market is segmented into North America, South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle-East and Africa.

North America is expected to dominate the global biochar market owing to growing awareness of the benefits of biochar in agricultural production, improving soil quality, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Growing R&D in biochar production technology, increased demand for biochar byproducts such as biofuels and syngas, and rising waste-to-energy programs will also contribute to the market growth in this region.

The key reason for the market growth in the APAC is its potential role in soil improvement and carbon sequestration, especially for smallholding farmers. Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, China, and Japan are the key countries in the region. The availability of agricultural waste is also influencing the market growth.

Competitive Analysis

Global biochar market is moderately consolidated market with significant companies occupying more than 1/3rd market share and rest by large group companies. The market is experiencing huge investment by the companies in development of novel products and further commercialization of developed products.

In July 2019, Aries Clean Energy launched retail sales of USDA certified biobased product Aries Green. Biochar is a byproduct of our patented gasification process that provides beneficial impacts to soil.

Some of the key players in the global biochar market includes Agri-Tech Producers LLC, BioChar Products, Diacarbon Energy Inc., Cool Planet., and many others.
