Scope

  • The number of POS terminals recorded a CAGR of 9.6%, increasing from 217,730 in 2018 to 313,971 in 2022e. This figure is set to reach 359,992 by 2026f. In July 2022, the government passed legislation requiring all merchants (including SMEs) to provide at least one electronic payment system. To capitalize, in October 2022, Samsung partnered with Viva Wallet and Mobco to launch the Viva Wallet POS app. The app enables merchants to convert Samsung smartphones into mobile POS devices.
  • In-store purchases were adversely affected by COVID-19 due to the closure of physical stores. To boost spending, retailers are focusing on offering convenient in-store shopping experiences. In March 2022, Swiss food and beverage vending services provider Selecta Group launched Foodies Shop & Go: a fully automated self-checkout store concept. Customers need to open the Scan & Go app and scan their credit or debit card at the entrance of the store. Sensor technology monitors customer movements and keeps track of the products they have selected in a virtual cart. Once an individual exits the store, the purchase amount is automatically debited from their credit or debit card and a receipt is sent to the Shop & Go app.
  • The proliferation of digital-only banks has helped drive competition in the banking space, thus boosting debit card holding. UK-based digital-only fintech company Revolut offers Standard, Plus, Premium, and Metal accounts along with a Mastercard debit card. Revolut also offers Revolut Junior accounts for individuals aged between six and 17. Meanwhile, digital-only bank Aion offers the Premium Membership account along with a multi-currency debit card. This enables users to make transactions in four currencies (US dollars, British pound sterling, Swiss francs, and Polish zloty).
