The Eagle Ford shale play is a sedimentary shale rock formation in Texas, US, stretching along the Gulf coast from the border of Mexico to the regions adjacent to Louisiana. The expanse of the Eagle Ford shale is around 400 miles long and 50 miles wide covering 27 counties in south and east Texas. Karnes, La Salle, De Witt, and Gonzales are the most prolific counties for crude oil and condensate production in the Eagle Ford play. Whereas the major natural gas producing counties include Webb, Karnes, and La Salle.
The Eagle Ford shale saw a decline in production activities during the COVID-19 pandemic 2020, prominently during August and September 2020. While production started to recover at the end of 2020 and into 2021, the ice storm throughout the Texas state hit the production resulting in a further decline of production in February 2021. However, by 2025 the crude oil and natural gas production in the Eagle Ford Shale is expected to grow steadily, exceeding their 2019 level.
