Scope

  • The migration of cash to cards has been supported by the increasing preference for contactless payments. The number of contactless cards in circulation rose from 14.8 million in 2019 to 21.6 million in 2023e. Growth in contactless transport payments will further support growth. In April 2022, Romania-based IT solutions provider for transport and telecommunications Radcom partnered with OTP Bank and Mastercard to launch a contactless payment system for public transport in the cities of Brasov, Iasi, and Constanta.
  • Digital-only banks will complement traditional banks in pushing overall banking and card penetration. For example, Raiffeisen Digital Bank (a subsidiary of Raiffeisen Bank) allows consumers to open current accounts online. Customers are also offered a virtual debit card that can be used to make payments; it can also be stored for use in Apple Pay.
  • Banks in Romania are offering installment payment facilities to drive credit card usage and compete with buy now pay later (BNPL) providers. Raiffeisen Bank offers a range of Mastercard-branded credit cards that enable holders to pay for purchases across up to 24 interest-free installments. Meanwhile, in June 2023, Sweden-based BNPL provider Klarna launched in Romania. It offers both immediate and credit options for ecommerce purchases, allowing customers to make payments within 30 days of receiving their items. It also offers an extended credit financing option, through which users can make payments in monthly installments across up to 36 months.
