According to the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat), the Italian economy shrank by 12.4% in the second quarter, on a quarterly basis, as economic activity nosedived during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The lockdown measures imposed by the government have also had a severe impact on the construction industry. Istat reported that the total construction production index declined by 17.1% in the first seven months of 2020 on a yearly basis. GlobalData expects the Italian construction industry to contract by 13.2% in 2020.
The economy has started to show signs of recovery, following the lifting of lockdown measures and the government's expansionary policy measures. However, the country is observing a second wave of COVID-19 transmissions, and therefore, the government is reimposing restrictions in some parts of the country; this is expected to weaken industry growth during Q3 and Q4 of 2020.
The industry is expected to rebound in 2021, with an annual growth rate of 5.9%. This is expected to be supported by investments in housing, healthcare, transport, energy, and tourism infrastructure projects. The industry's output is projected to grow to an average of 1.4% during the remaining part of the forecast period (2020-2024). The country's high budget deficit, unemployment rate and sluggish economic growth are expected to constrain the industry's growth over the forecast period.
