The global residential backup power market size was valued at USD 14.7 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 16.0 billion in 2026 to USD 27.3 billion by 2033, at a CAGR of 8.0% from 2026 to 2033. North America dominated the global market, accounting for the largest revenue share of 44.0% in 2025, driven by growing concerns about grid reliability, frequent power interruptions, and rising household dependence on uninterrupted electricity. Growing adoption of battery-based and higher-capacity backup solutions is further expanding residential demand.
The increasing frequency and impact of power outages are primary drivers of demand for residential backup power. Extreme weather, grid congestion, aging infrastructure, and supply disruptions are leaving households increasingly exposed to costly interruptions, prompting consumers to invest in generators, batteries, and portable power stations to maintain essential electricity services. A 2025 Nature Communications study found that backup generation was available in only 12% of surveyed U.S. residential customers, while 33% said they would temporarily relocate during a one-day power interruption, highlighting both the consequences of outages and the relatively low penetration of household backup systems.
Furthermore, growing consumer interest in alternatives to conventional generator-based backup is expanding demand for battery-based systems and portable power stations. These technologies provide backup without fuel storage, refueling, or combustion-related emissions, while offering greater flexibility for household energy use. For instance, a 2025 survey commissioned by EcoFlow found that 67% of homeowners in California, Texas, and Florida considered home backup power important, while 60% wanted to become less dependent on the grid, and 70% either already had or were interested in a solar-battery solution. This growing interest is supporting the adoption of battery-based backup systems alongside conventional generators.
Moreover, increasing dependence on electricity for essential household functions is also raising the value of uninterrupted power and supporting demand for higher-capacity backup systems. Internet connectivity, refrigeration, home working, heating and cooling, security systems, and electronic appliances increasingly depend on a continuous power supply, making even relatively short outages disruptive. According to a 2024 L.G. U.S. residential survey, 67% of homeowners reported experiencing a power outage during the previous year; among those affected, 50% experienced an outage lasting more than 30 minutes, and 14% experienced one lasting at least 3 hours. This is increasing demand for systems that can move beyond basic lighting and device charging toward refrigerators, HVAC equipment, communication equipment, and multiple household circuits.
