Bridging the IT Infrastructure Skills Gap by Hiring Outside the Box

This IDC Perspective uses conclusions drawn from Data Center World 2022 and IDC's research to address the difficulties in hiring younger talent into IT infrastructure roles. The COVID-19 pandemic and the Great Resignation have led to IT skills and labor shortages at a time when many businesses are working to transform their digital infrastructure. Coupled with the tendency for computer science graduates to gravitate toward development roles rather than infrastructure, IT decision makers are incentivized to seek candidates in new places and hire and build up inexperienced workers."As the effects of the Great Resignation of 2021 linger, the lack of IT infrastructure talent threatens to stall digital transformation initiatives," says Johnny Yu, research manager, Storage and Computing, IDC. "Companies need to become comfortable seeking candidates outside of computer science graduates and with cultivating today's staff into tomorrow's leaders."
