This IDC study provides an overview of the worldwide enterprise storage systems market performance for the full year 2019."Continued performance of the enterprise storage systems market was a difficult act to follow in 2019 after a record-setting prior year (+26.7% year over year in 2018), but overall, the market remained fairly stable, albeit slightly down, declining 1.2% during the year," said Greg Macatee, research analyst, Infrastructure Platforms and Technologies at IDC. "During the year, we saw pickups in external storage and ODM Direct systems (+1.9% y/y and 0.2% y/y, respectively) contrasted by a decline of 3.0% y/y in internal (server-based) storage systems. Hyperscaler demand for ODM systems came in especially strong during the past few months of the year (+38.2% y/y in 4Q19) that propped up performance within the segment for the full year, while demand for external OEM systems was stable and consistent throughout the year with growth in the low to mid-single digits in year-over-year terms. We anticipate high levels of global market uncertainty as suppliers and buyers adapt to changing conditions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. At this point, IDC forecasts a market contraction through at least the first three quarters of 2020."
