This IDC study is a translation of the Japanese document. The report presents the market forecast from 2018 to 2022, as well as future outlook on the Japan enterprise network equipment market that is made up of the Ethernet switch, router, and WLAN equipment markets. The Japan enterprise network equipment market is a relatively stable and mature market. The "wireless-first" trend in the WLAN equipment market will be in full swing, which will contribute to the continuous growth in this market while the other markets continue to mature. Meanwhile, IDC expects the enterprise router market to diminish gradually because of the shrinking replacement demand despite the short-term growth in demand for office routers following growth in the VPN services market. IDC also predicts that the L2 fixed unmanaged switch market will shrink considerably in the future. This is because the market is competing with wireless technology triggered by the wireless-first trend. "Ethernet switch vendors and WLAN equipment vendors should reconsider their access network strategies for wireless first. Ethernet switch vendors will have to decide whether they should aim for profit on the remaining players as a niche market, or they should make their WLAN portfolio extensively available and ride on the wireless-first wave. Similarly, WLAN equipment vendors must prepare themselves for the continuous competition in product lineup expansion," says Kenichi Kusano, communications group manager, IDC Japan.
