1Q18's 9.7% sequential unit decline is roughly equivalent with the average first-quarter sequential unit decline since 1Q15. Compared with the average first-quarter sequential unit decline of 7.2% since 1Q96, when IDC began tracking this market, 9.7% represents a new normal for the PC processor market. Despite PC processors having found applications in markets other than PCs - such as some tablets, point-of-sale systems, and thin clients - their reliance on demand from PC systems means they share in the megatrends, including ubiquitous connectivity, that have diminished PC growth to system markets in the datacenter and at the edge of the internet. IDC elaborates on these trends in Worldwide Embedded and Intelligent Systems Forecast, 2018-2022: Data Transformation and the Journey of Data Across the Internet Landscape from the Physical to the Digital (IDC #US43690318, April 2018).This IDC study examines the performance of the PC microprocessor market overall and through its desktop PC processor and mobile PC processor segments."Overall PC processor unit shipments were seasonally down in 1Q18," said Shane Rau, research vice president, Computing Semiconductors. "However, the blended average selling price (ASP) was up because of a higher share of high-end processors in 1Q18 than in 4Q17."
