The "one size fits all" design principle has rendered today's networks inefficient and poorly equipped to deal with the exploding traffic. It's a dire predicament communication SPs face today as the number of potential use cases is only growing, with enterprises and verticals throwing up new ones that today's networks can't address in terms of latency, scalability, availability, and reliability. To service these new requirements adequately, there needs to be a fundamental rearchitecting of these networks. "Network slicing is an exciting new technology that will become mainstream as 5G networks are deployed commercially. Enterprises and verticals have new use cases in consideration that today's networks can't address in terms of latency, scalability, availability, and reliability. These new requirements will not be serviced correctly without a fundamental rearchitecting of these networks. To this end, the industry is moving rapidly toward 5G, a new network architecture that is built to scale on a foundation of shared physical infrastructure with virtualized network elements allowing operators to quickly scale resources up and down to meet demand efficiently. This is the basis for the concept of network slicing," says Shiv Putcha, contributing analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific.
