Worldwide Carrier Multi-Access Edge Cloud Software Forecast, 2019-2023
Published: June 7, 2019 Content info: 19 Pages

This IDC study examines the most prominent use cases for the carrier edge cloud and their associated market segments - the mobile edge cloud (cloud RAN, data plane of the packet core, and virtual backhaul), wireline edge cloud (virtual OLT, virtual Broadband Network Gateway [BNG], and virtual CPE), cable edge cloud (virtual CMTS), and the carrier CDN edge featuring virtual CDNs that IDC believes will be colocated with the other three edges. While IDC sees long-term potential for other use cases such as cloud gaming, automatic cars, and AR/VR, they have been included in this document considering they are unlikely to be major factors in the forecast period. IDC expects spending on software (virtualized network function[VNFs] and NFVI) at the carrier edge cloud across the four-market subsegments considered in this document to grow from $1.27 billion in 2018 to about $11.15 billion in 2023."Moving processing and content closer to their respective consumers is a recurring theme across next-generation wireline and wireless carrier access networks. So is the need to build virtualized or cloud-native networks. Building the distributed telco cloud (aka the multi-access edge cloud [MEC]) in the near term is an urgent imperative for carriers," says Rajesh Ghai, research director, Carrier Network Infrastructure, IDC. "This document is IDC's first effort to size and forecast this strategically important segment of carrier network infrastructure."
