The total market for EMG monitoring includes both EMG monitoring devices and EMG consumables. Over the forecast period, consumables will represent a growing proportion of the total market, due to a greater demand for EMG procedures among the growing elderly demographic. The monitor market, on the other hand, will remain flat as the market has reached saturation and continues to operate on a replacement basis. Slight growth is expected in the total market as consumable sales increase and prices stabilize across segments. New electrodiagnostic EMG device purchases will be modest, driven primarily by replacement sales and alternate care sites are expected to show little demand moving forward. However, sales of consumables are expected to continue to rise and cause the market to grow towards the end of the forecast period. Electromyography (EMG) devices measure the electrical activity in muscles and the functionality of the nervous system to find the cause of muscle malfunctions. Disorders causing nerve impairment can affect muscle function, due to improper firing of electrical pulses. Some examples of nervous system complications include: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), carpal tunnel syndrome and myasthenia gravis (MG). EMG monitoring and diagnostic capabilities are limited to nerve and muscle function and are not able to diagnose brain or spinal cord diseases.
