About Reusable Launch Vehicles

A reusable launch launch vehicle (RLV) is a launch system that can launch a satellite into space more than once. It is different from the expendable launch system, wherein each vehicle is launched once and then discarded. Reusable launch vehicles or RLV is not a new concept. NASA initiated its RLV program in 1994, and the program progressed on two fronts in 1996 with a restructuring of the X-34 air-launched small booster project along with a contractor for the development of the larger X-33 technology demonstrator.
