Overview:

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is a concept developed by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) that aims to bring computational power into Mobile RAN (radio access network) to promote virtualization of software at the radio edge.

MEC brings virtualized applications much closer to mobile users ensuring network flexibility, economy and scalability for improved user experience. MEC ensures IT and Cloud computing capabilities to be served from the edge of the mobile network instead of the data center. It helps application developers and content providers stay much closer to mobile subscribers within the RAN (Radio Access Network).

It creates an ultra-low latency and high bandwidth environment that allows faster access to radio network information for applications. The MEC service environment allows seamless access experience and responsiveness for content, services, and applications. It enhances the mobile subscriber's experience. Mobile network operators have the opportunity to play a greater role in the emerging MEC ecosystem as they can add value through optimized apps and content.

Shifting communication from centralized computing towards edge and this will be a key reason that in the next few years, MEC will demonstrate growth of 61.5% of CAGR through 2028 with markets valued at over $8.8 billion. Despite these great opportunities, there is a need for much work in certain areas such as developing synergies between various types of mobile edge devices and computing infrastructure. There is also a need to optimize general technology integration and deal with security challenges.

The dramatic push to existing core networking control towards the edge will generate benefits for many different applications in existing and next generation technologies involving artificial intelligence, IoT, virtual reality and more. The United States will be the leading market for MEC. Australia, China, Japan, Singapore and India will lead Asia Pac with 61.1% CAGR and value of over $2.3 billion by 2028.
