While fixed wireless gets much of the attention as the likely first 5G application, Mind Commerce sees the Internet of Things (IoT) as a much more important beneficiary of the 5G ecosystem, which includes evolved LTE, 5G NR, and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). 5G enabled IoT connections will start slow as Communication Service Providers (CSP) begin to take small steps with the introduction of new infrastructure, radio communications, and spectrum allocations. However, CSPs will enjoy many longer term benefits as they will out-compete non-cellular IoT networks such as the Low Power WAN (LPWAN) systems deployed today. It is important to note that a portion of CSP IoT networks will need to be cost competitive including those LPWAN networks that wireless carriers continue to support.

One of the clear benefits that the 5G ecosystem (HetNets consisting of LTE, mmWave, and WiFi) will provide is much great capacity for enhanced IoT services. While LPWAN will continue to be used for lower value IoT solutions such as M2M supported telemetry apps, mobile network operators will leverage 5G systems for more complex and less cost sensitive solutions. Higher value use cases will be identified over time as CSPs integrate IoT with 5G and begin to realize economies of scope. Many of these new solutions will take advantage of faster processing thanks to MEC and advanced data analytics for real-time decision making.
