The South African lime market is projected to register a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period (2020-2025). Citrus is the most important agricultural produce in South Africa. South Africa is one of the major producers of lime with a total acreage of 23,331 hectares, producing 0.47 million metric ton in 2018. The major cultivars of lime in South Africa are Eureka, Lisbon, Genoa, Limoneira, Fino, Lime. In 2017, Eureka alone accounted for 74% of the total lime production.
High level of new-plantings, improved water management techniques by farmers, and duty-free exports of lime are some of the factors that are driving the production of lime in South Africa, thus, leading to higher exports of lime from South Africa.
Increasing Production of Lime
South Africa is one of the major producers of lime with a total acreage of 23,331 hectares, producing 0.47 million metric ton of lime in 2018. According to FAO, the acreage of production increased from 15,997 ha in 2016 to 23,331 ha in 2018. With the increasing area of production, the quantity being produced also increased. In 2018, the production of lime reached 0.47 million metric ton, as compared to 0.32 million metric ton in 2016. The increasing area under cultivation and favorable government policies, such as subsidies, are encouraging the lime growers in the country to increase their production.
Rising Export is Driving the Market
The country is less dependent on imports, as it is self-sufficient with its production and is one of the major exporters of lime. Thus, most of the lime produced in South Africa is exported. In 2018, lime exports reached 0.314 million metric ton, as against the production of 0.47 million metric ton, accounting for a total export value of USD 268,885 thousand.
According to ITC Trade, major export destinations for South African lime are the Netherlands, with an import value of USD 36,515 thousand in 2019, followed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, with import values of USD 31,538 thousand and USD 30,511 thousand, respectively, in 2019. Imports from these countries are steadily increasing, thus, indicating the growth of South African lime exports.
