Smart meters could be dubbed the original smart grid device. More than a decade after the earliest models of communicating electric meters were deployed, the market for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI, or smart meters) remains strong and growing. The global smart meter market is extending its reach as projects in emerging markets begin to gain traction. Meanwhile, developed markets remain active.
Within the United States, the rate of project announcements has slowed, but new deployments continue among late adopters. Across Western Europe, utilities and retailers in Spain, France, and the United Kingdom have large-scale deployments underway. Eastern European countries like Estonia, Poland, and Romania will also support smart meter growth. In Asia Pacific, China is nearing the end of its massive smart meter rollout, but India is beginning its program and utilities in Japan are expected to install around 80 million smart meters by 2025. Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Taiwan are all in varying stages of smart meter deployments. Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are also experiencing increased activity after a slow entry into the smart meter market. Navigant Research expects the global penetration of smart meters to climb from approximately 30% at the end of 2016 to 53% by the end of 2025, leaving considerable upside in the market in the years beyond.
This Navigant Research report examines the global market opportunity for smart electric meters, with a focus on AMI communications technologies. The study provides market forecasts through 2025 for smart electric meter installed bases, as well as shipments and the associated revenue. Forecasts are segmented by region and technology, including cellular, radio frequency (RF) mesh, point-to-multipoint, power line communication (PLC), and other (e.g., fiber and Wi-Fi). The report also examines the key global market drivers and barriers related to smart metering.
