Report Summary:

The cloud has played a pivotal role in catalyzing the ongoing artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. The development and proliferation of today's powerful, affordable, and accessible AI solutions was triggered by the availability of neural network-based services offered by the major cloud hyperscalers. And while much of the activity in the AI world has shifted to the higher-volume edge market, the cloud and data center sector remains a fast-growing and vital center of innovation. Semiconductors designed to accelerate artificial intelligence-known as AI processors-are the essential ingredient of this innovation. AI processors represent the genesis of the AI revolution, with graphics processing units (GPUs) making possible the efficient and practical acceleration of neural networks (NNs). These AI processors also are the key enabler of the continuing development and proliferation of AI technology.

A number of factors are set to contribute to the continuing growth of the cloud and data center AI processor market. The penetration of AI processing chips into the market for cloud and data center servers is still relatively low, leaving plenty of room for growth. Despite the increase in AI processing capabilities in devices ranging from smartphones to automobiles, edge devices will need to continue to send certain demanding AI tasks to the cloud and data centers, where powerful AI processing capabilities are available. Moreover, the available market for AI processors is expanding, with enterprises increasingly seeking to add the kinds of AI capabilities previously found only in the cloud.

The copious growth opportunities in cloud and data center AI processors have attracted new competition, with a range of innovative chip types arriving on the scene with hopes of dethroning GPU-based devices from their current market leadership. While the GPU-based chips are expected to remain the king of the cloud and data center hill at least for the next five years, newer approaches that aim to offer more processing power and greater efficiency will gain market share. These innovative solutions will be needed as data centers approach the limits to AI processing caused by soaring power consumption.

And that is not the end of the story for advancements in AI processor technology. In pursuit of ever greater performance and efficiency, AI processors are expected to become customized to suit the specific workloads they are running. More profoundly, AI-based chip design techniques are coming into play- potentially reshaping the current categories of AI processors and leading to the creation of completely new types of chips.
