Description

Abstract

Introduction

Gamification is the use of game mechanics in non-game contexts to motivate behavior. It makes use of positive psychology, self-determination theory, and behavioral methods associated with game design to create systems that better engage people and, in turn, increase the likelihood that a specific objective is completed. This report is the first of two reports that examine the gamification opportunity.

Highlights

  • Gamification is an oft-derided term, so perhaps the concept is unfortunately named, but in Ovum's view the gamification trend is real, with significant and tangible benefits. As with any emerging use of technology, however, adopters of gamification will face a number of substantial obstacles and risks.
  • Understand the basics of gamification theory and design.
