Note: Surge arresters must not be operated directly in power networks. The extremely low internal resistance of these networks can create an excessive current which can exceed the permissible follow current through the ignited gas tube arrester. The arrester no longer extinguishes and can reach excessive temperatures. Metal Oxide Varistors connected in series with the arrester are well suited for limiting the follow on current.
