According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Barrier Films Market is accounted for $19,779.28 million in 2021 and is expected to reach $32,601.72 million by 2028 growing at a CAGR of 7.4% during the forecast period. Barrier films involve an integral part of food packaging solutions mainly thin plastic based products. It holds application in food type and products such as bakery, pet food, sugar confectionery, dehydrated food and beverage including chips and chocolates. In different products, unless there is good seal integrity there is no need of using a barrier film. Barrier films are used mainly to extend the shelf life and for protection of food products from various external influences providing oxygen and moisture barriers. It holds the main use in the packaging of products.

Market Dynamics:

Driver:

Growing demand for longer shelf life for food products

The increasingly busy lifestyle of consumers and the consequent demand for convenient food packaging is driving the demand for barrier films. Barrier films help increase the product life and reduce the use of preservatives. Barrier films also act as a printing substrate, which provides aesthetic appeal to the product. The food & beverage industry is shifting from traditional packaging formats to lightweight and easy to transport packaging. Barrier films help cater to this demand as they are lightweight compared to rigid packaging and eliminate the use of glass and cans, which increase the weight of packaging.

Restraint:

Susceptibility to degradation

At elevated temperatures, barrier films are susceptible to oxidative degradation. PVDC, which has similar properties to that of PVC, is unstable when exposed to UV light and heat. The degradation in barrier films is mainly observed due to the presence of pinholes and cracks in the coating layers. Nylon is also one of the materials used in the production of barrier films having excellent barrier protection against flavors and gases. However, nylon tends to absorb moisture easily and act as a plasticizer, thereby degrading the gas barrier properties of the polymer. Some of the resins used for the production of barrier films change its properties when exposed to light or extreme temperatures. This changes the mechanical and tensile strength of films and, sometimes, leads to scaling of the film.

Opportunity:

Biodegradable barrier films

There is an increasing pressure to decrease the environmental impact of packaging. Food & beverage companies are taking these environmental concerns into consideration and decreasing the amount of polymer used without compromising the performance of the product. To reduce the environmental effect, some companies have started the production of biodegradable and renewable cellulose-based barrier films. For instance, Alcan Packaging Food Americas offers Ceramis PLA, a biodegradable barrier film.

Threat:

Issue related to recycling to multilayer films

Multilayer films offer properties, such as improved strength and robustness, which cannot be obtained from single-layer films. They are made by arranging two or more thermoplastics co-extruded or laminated films to form one homogenous film with distinct individual layers. They provide a range of properties, which cannot be obtained from monolayer films. However, the recyclability of these multilayer films is a major challenge, as these films are produced by using different materials. Thus, recycling of different materials needs different processing, which is not a feasible option.

The inorganic oxide coating films segment is expected to have the highest CAGR during the forecast period

The inorganic oxide coating films segment is growing at the highest CAGR in the market due to the superior properties of EVOH that include improved flexibility and excellent barrier against oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. PVDC prevents oxidation, moisture loss, and aroma and odor transfer. These characteristics of EVOH and PVDC make them suitable materials for packaging applications, especially in the food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and agriculture industries, thereby contributing to the growth of the inorganic oxide coating films segment.

The metallized films segment is expected to be the largest during the forecast period

The metallized films segment is expected to be the largest share due to metalized barrier films are specially designed to preserve various types of products to provide a high barrier against oxygen as well as humidity in terms of ensuring extent shelf life for sensitive products, which helps to boost its demand in the forecast year.

Region with highest share:

North America is projected to hold the largest share in the market due to huge demand of barrier films in most of the applications, along with this most of the advance technology based barrier films are launched in the region. The U.S. is expected to dominate and lead the growth of the North American market, which is expected to increase due to increases usages of barrier films in wide applications, along with this huge R&D procedure is perform in the U.S. for introduce advance technology based barrier films in order to provide better services to the end user.

Region with highest CAGR:

The Asia Pacific is projected to have the highest CAGR in the market due to strong demand from end-use industries, such as food & beverage packaging and agriculture. This dominance is attributed to the high demand from food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and agriculture end-use industries in China, Japan, and India, among others.

Key players in the market:

Some of the key players profiled in the Barrier Films Market include Sealed Air Corporation, Uflex Limited, Atlantis-Pak Co. Ltd., Amcor Limited, Bemis Company, Inc., Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc., Berry Global, Inc., Toppan Printing Co. Ltd., Huhtamaki Oyj, Dai Nippon Printing, Ultimet Films Limited, DuPont Teijin Films, Toray Advanced Film, Schur Flexibles Group, Mondi, Winpak Ltd., 3M, FUJIFILM, Ampac Holdings, LLC, and Flexopack.

Key developments:

In September 2020: Amcor Plc developed first recyclable retorts flexible packaging with improved environmental footprint of packaging to 60% (approximately). This will allow recycling of high-performance packaging, such as wet pet food, ready-meals, baby foods, and pre-cooked soups. This new product development will help the company cater to the growing demand for sustainable packaging products and expand its packaging product portfolio.

In March 2020: Berry Global Inc. planned to invest USD 30 million for upgrades and new lines to existing assets in nine of the company's North American locations. This investment is to increase the production capacity of ultra-high performance stretch films. This organic growth strategy was adopted to cater to the growing demand for stretch films and fortify position in the North America market.

In January 2020: Amcor Plc signed partnership with Moda Vaccum Packaging System (New Zealand) to provide innovative packaging solution. With the synergy of Amcor's rollstock film and shrink bag for cheese & meat with Moda's packaging system, producers can drive total cost saving and operational efficiency.

In July 2019: Berry Global Inc. The company acquired RPC Group Plc (UK). This acquisition will make Berry Global Plc one of the largest plastic packaging companies and a leading supplier of value-added protective solutions globally. With this acquisition, the company's global presence will increase over 290 locations spread across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.

In June 2019: Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. established a new subsidiary company, Toppan (Thailand) Co., Ltd in Thailand. Toppan Thailand will fulfill the marketing needs for the company in Thailand and the ASEAN region to better serve its customers. With this expansion, the company will increase its presence in the APAC region.

In April 2017: Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. entered into a joint venture with Max Specialty Films, a flagship manufacturing business of Max Ventures and Industries (India). Toppan would be a strategic partner to Max Specialty Films and lends its expertise in managing a global specialty films business as well as uses its global sales network.
