Macrolides are a class of antibiotics, used to treat and manage bacterial infections. These antibiotic compounds have a macrocyclic lactone ring attached with deoxy sugars. Erythromycin has a narrow spectrum of activity with action against gram-positive and few gram-negative bacteria. On the other hand, clarithromycin and azithromycin are active against gram-negative bacteria such as helicobacter pylori, taxoplasma gondii and others.
