The global data center UPS market size by investment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.17% from 2024 to 2030.

KEY TRENDS

Adoption of Advanced UPS Batteries

  • The data center UPS market is expected to experience substantial growth, driven by the increasing demand for technological advancement. With the growing digital transformation, there is a higher demand for reliable and efficient data centers, including UPS systems, to have a continuous power supply and prevent loss during outages. Industries such as e-commerce, telecommunication, and finance rely on data centers, driving the need for advanced UPS systems.
  • Li-ion batteries were introduced in the 1970s, with the first commercial non-rechargeable versions that came later on. The rechargeable variant was commercialized by Sony in 1991, which was a great advancement in battery technology.
  • The upcoming Sydney facility by AWS will be equipped with emergency backup generators, diesel and Li-ion battery storage, a substation, and associated infrastructure in terms of power.
  • The ZUR02 Zurich data center by STACK Infrastructure has six primary critical systems from a dedicated 2.4 MW double-conversion static UPS with five minutes of Li-ion battery autonomy, having N+1 redundancy.

Software-Defined Power & Data Center Infrastructure Automation

  • The concept of software-defined power and data center infrastructure automation is elevated on how data centers operate, enhancing efficiency, scalability, and flexibility. A major concern among data center operators is the increasing power consumption and wastage by various infrastructures. In addition, data center infrastructure requires regular monitoring and management to function effectively.
  • These operators adopt automation and monitoring solutions to reduce the need for manual interference, with remote monitoring systems highlighting a maintenance requirement or detecting a failure during the regular testing process. A reduction in power consumption and wastage in modern data centers is achieved through end-to-end monitoring and automation of facilities.
  • Software-defined monitoring is crucial for the long-term effectiveness of UPS systems and aids in the correct installation, regular maintenance, and physical security of the UPS systems. The deployment of edge data centers is also on the rise, and software-defined UPS monitoring is required to keep its operations running smoothly.

Adoption of DC UPS Systems to Mitigate Loss of Power

  • Several industrial applications have traditionally relied on alternating current (AC) power, but there is a notable shift occurring in the data center UPS market. Many data center operators explore the implementation of direct current (DC) power for their internal power distribution systems. This shift is driven by the recognition that energy losses occur during the conversions between AC and DC power within data center infrastructures. By minimizing the number of power conversions, data centers can reduce heat generation, leading to lower operational expenditures (OPEX) and improved energy efficiency.
  • In addition, DC power systems require less physical space, which can be a significant advantage in the extreme environment of data centers. This space-saving aspect is particularly important as data center demands continue to grow. Furthermore, DC power can be more seamlessly integrated with various renewable energy devices and other technologies that also operate on DC, promoting a more cohesive energy management strategy. The combination of these benefits makes DC power an appealing option for modern data center operators looking to optimize their operations and enhance their sustainability efforts.
  • Meta (Facebook) uses a 48V DC UPS system for its operations, which supports up to six IT cabinets. The total power wastage in a typical data center environment using an AC UPS system is over 20%, as per Facebook. However, replacing AC with DC UPS systems will reduce power wastage by around 7.7%.

U.S. TARIFF IMPACT ON GLOBAL DATA CENTER UPS MARKET

  • A trade war refers to an economic conflict in which countries impose tariffs or other trade barriers against each other, typically as a response to similar actions taken by the opposing party. Currently, the world is witnessing the emergence of a global trade war, sparked by the U.S.'s imposition of tariffs on the growing list of countries.
  • On April 2, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump introduced new tariffs, referred to as reciprocal tariffs, on imports from approximately 90 countries. Described by the president as "Liberation Day," the move aims to address the U.S.'s trade deficit with countries from China to the EU. The tariffs, which include an across-the-board 10% tax on all imports, mark a significant escalation in the ongoing trade tensions between the United States and other countries.
  • However, on April 9, 2025, President Trump backtracked on parts of his tariff plan, announcing a 90-day pause on the reciprocal tariffs. Therefore, the general tariff rate was reduced to 10% for most countries. The significant exception remains China, as on April 16, 2025, China faced 245% tariffs on most of its exports to the US, based on the most recent revisions in Trump's trade policies. China responded with 125% tariffs on US products.
  • The recent tariff war has posed a challenge for data center infrastructure, particularly in sourcing raw materials, as increased import and export taxes are expected to raise overall infrastructure costs. For example, the United States has imposed tariffs of around 245% on China, which will increase the cost of equipment imported from China and nearby regions. In response, China has imposed tariffs of around 125% on the United States, which will raise the cost of materials such as electronic equipment that China imports from the U.S.

GLOBAL DATA CENTER UPS MARKET'S SEGMENTATION INSIGHTS

  • Hyperscale operators such as AWS, Google, Meta, and Microsoft are involved in their respective data center projects across the globe. These operators focus more on the deployment of OCP scale infrastructure in their data center facilities. This drives the investments for OCP infrastructure across the globe.
  • The data center UPS market with a 500kVA-1,000kVA capacity is highly suitable for medium to large data center facilities with multiple data halls.
  • Equinix operates many data centers around the globe that feature high-level redundancy. It offers various UPS configurations, including 750 kVA systems with N+1 redundancy.
  • Operators in the data center UPS market often rely on VRLA battery-powered UPS systems due to their cost-effectiveness and average lifespan of five years post-installation. However, the service life of these batteries generally decreases after the initial three years, influenced by factors such as the operating environment and maintenance practices.
