In a significant step towards enhancing 'Aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defence, the Ministry of Defence signed contracts, for the procurement of the upgraded Akash Weapon System and 12 Swathi (Plains) Weapon Locating Radars (WLR) for the Indian Army. The total value of these contracts exceeds ₹9,100 crore. A contract valued at over ₹8,160 crore was signed with Bharat Dynamics Limited for the acquisition of the improved Akash Weapon System (AWS) for the 3rd and 4th Regiments of Army Air Defence. This includes live missiles, launchers with enhanced features, ground support equipment, vehicles, and necessary infrastructure. The AWS is a Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (SRSAM) system, fully developed and designed in India by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). To address aerial threats, two more regiments equipped with the upgraded system are being procured for deployment along the Northern borders. The enhanced version features advanced seeker technology, a smaller operational footprint, 360-degree engagement capability, and improved performance in diverse environmental conditions. This initiative is expected to significantly boost the Indian missile production sector and the broader domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem. The project currently has an indigenous content of 82%, which is projected to rise to 93% by 2026-27.
