Calciphylaxis or calcific uremic arteriolopathy is a syndrome of vascular calcification, thrombosis, and skin necrosis. It mostly occurs in patients with end-stage kidney disease or kidney transplant. Calciphylaxis results in chronic non-healing wounds and is usually fatal. It has a high mortality rate, owing to cardiovascular disease and sepsis caused due to infected skin ulcers. The exact pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease is not known. Most patients with the condition have abnormalities in blood-clotting factors.
