A tympanostomy is a surgical procedure in which a small cut (incision) is made on the eardrum (also called the tympanic membrane) to place a small tube called the tympanostomy tube in the ear. The eardrum separates the external ear from the middle ear. It plays a role in hearing and preventing the entry of any foreign material into the middle ear. Infections of the middle ear (otitis media) may cause fluid to collect in the middle ear space. This fluid, or pus, can increase the pressure in the ear and hamper hearing. This is particularly worrisome for children because untreated hearing difficulties can cause delays in speech and language development. Persistent builtup of pus in the middle ear can erode the bony structures and result in the spread of infection. It puts pressure on the nerves and blood vessels, thereby damaging them. Placing a tympanostomy tube allows the fluid from the middle ear to drain out, thus relieving the pressure and limiting the spread of infection. The launch of new products for tympanostomy products is responsible for the market expansion over the forecast period.
The key players in the medical device industry are focusing on the development of technologically advanced equipment, instruments, and systems for various surgical procedures. Thus, the introduction of such advanced products in the market is expected to drive growth of the global tympanostomy products market over the forecast period. For instance, in June 2021, Preceptis Medical, Inc., an innovative surgical technology company dedicated to providing less invasive options for pediatric patients, announced the launch of their next-generation Hummingbird Tympanostomy Tube System (TTS) for office-based pediatric ear tube procedures. The next-generation Hummingbird device features an enhanced ergonomic design that allows for more efficient ear tube delivery in children.
