A biliary stent is a metal or plastic tube that is inserted into a duct or lumen to keep the passage open. The metal biliary stent is a flexible metallic tube that is designed to hold the blocked bile duct open. These stents have numerous applications such as leaking of the bile duct, biliary strictures, and malignant biliary obstruction. In pancreatic cancer, the metal non-covered biliary stent has higher rate of tissue growths and lower risk for cholecystitis. Furthermore, these stents are non-removable and advantageous due to increased diameter of the stent that reduces recurrent obstruction. Stents are used to relieve symptoms of bile duct cancer. Bile duct cancer can grow and block bile duct. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is the procedure that is used to place the stent. ERCP is also used to diagnose bile duct cancer. The biliary stent endoscopic is inserted post-surgery for unblocking the bile duct, and to make sure it remains operative and inflated. The biliary stent can be made of inert substances like metal or plastic that are less likely to cause the body to mount an immunological response.
The growing geriatric population and high prevalence of biliary diseases is driving the growth of the global metal non-covered biliary stent market. Technological advancements in the treatment of biliary disorders and growing healthcare expenditure in emerging economies is estimated to drive the market growth during the forecast period. Moreover, key players are focused in research & development, and commercialization of novel biliary stents. For instance, in October 2020, Olympus, a global technology leader in designing and delivering innovative solutions for medical and surgical procedures, among other core businesses, announced the launch of its StoneMasterV and VorticCatchV EndoTherapy devices that increases efficiency in bile duct stone management and retrieval for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
