Blow-fill-seal (BFS) is an aseptic manufacturing technology used for packaging. It is a continuous and automated process. First step of the process include extrusion of the material such as plastic, which is heated at around 200 °C to take the shape of the mold and form a container. The next step is filling the container with liquids, and then the neck of it is air tightly sealed and the container comes out of the mold. The labelling of the container is generally done outside. It almost takes 10 to 15 seconds for this whole process to complete and the capacity of a machine depends on the number of molds it contains. The advantage of Blow-fill-seal (BFS) system is that it packages in unit dosage form, minimizing human errors. It also minimizes the risk of contamination. It is used for packaging of medical devices, diagnostic kits, tablets, syringes, vaccines, and others.
The global blow-fill-seal (BFS) packaging services in healthcare market growth is expected to accelerate, owing to emerging technologies in blow-fill-seal (BFS) system and strategies adopted by key players in the Blow-fill-seal (BFS) packaging services in healthcare market. For instance, in February 2019, ProAmpac participated in an event, Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD & M), held in California. The company showcased its packaging solutions for sealing such as PRO-PEEL Medical. It is a peelable medical seal used in the sealing process that ensures seal integrity of the package.
Furthermore, pipeline products of blow-fill-seal (BFS) system are also expected to drive the global Blow-fill-seal (BFS) packaging services in healthcare market growth. For instance, ApiJect Systems Corporation has two products of blow-fill-seal (BFS) system in the pipeline. BFS Reservoir + Needle Hub, which has the capacity of 0.1 ml to 3ml and all the elements are made out of plastic. It provides multi-fold drug label and vaccine vial monitor. The other product is BFS Reservoir + Needle Hub + RFID, which contains unique electronic ID and drug label.
