Behenyl alcohol (Docosanol) is a fatty alcohol and is used as a thickener and emulsifier in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and nutritional supplements. The emulsifying property of behenyl alcohol prevents the oil and water phases of the product from separation and improves the consistency of the cosmetic product, which enables an even distribution of the skincare product.
In 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved docosanol as an antiviral medication. Docosanol can be used to reduce Herpes simplex virus-induced cold sores. Docosanol is used extensively and has a purity level of about 70%. Docosanol with a purity level of more than 80% is used rarely. Behenyl alcohol covers a small portion of the overall fatty alcohols market.
Behenyl alcohol is increasingly being used in the pharmaceutical and organic cosmetics industries, which is the main driver of the product's demand globally. Majority of the world's rapeseed is produced in Europe. Most Europe-based cosmetic businesses negotiate lower prices for raw materials than competitors from North America and Asia Pacific. Furthermore, there are more than 450 major and minor manufacturers of cosmetics and personal care products throughout Europe. Behenyl alcohol market in Europe is anticipated to be driven by rising anti-aging product usage. Market for behenyl alcohol in Asia Pacific is also anticipated to grow due to the supply of low-cost labor and raw materials as well as growing demand for organic cosmetics.
However, a significant problem impeding growth of the behenyl alcohol market is the surplus of fatty alcohol. High cost of behenyl alcohol stands a significant barrier to growth of cosmetic and personal care products business when compared to other long-chain fatty alcohols. Behenyl alcohol has a number of negative side effects, including dizziness, chest pain, face swelling, etc. These could discourage customers from buying products that contain behenyl alcohol, which can significantly impede the market's overall growth.
