Epistaxis, also known as nose bleeding, is a common clinical condition that results in loss of blood from the tissue lining of the nose. Epistaxis is usually classified as anterior or posterior epistaxis. Anterior epistaxis is defined as the bleeding from anterior septum of the nose, which is usually known as Kiesselbach plexus. Anterior epistaxis is also known as acute epistaxis and is the most commonly observed type of epistaxis that can be cured through various medical treatments. On the other hand, posterior nosebleeds originating from the back of nasal package, near the throat are a relatively less common clinical condition, as it may result in significantly large amount of blood loss. The posterior nosebleeds lead to massive blood loss and difficulty in breathing that may result in fatigue, paleness, and chest pain.
However, most nosebleeds are rarely life threatening and are benign, self-limiting, spontaneous, but recurrent. Epistaxis can be caused due to various factors such as lack of humidity in the atmosphere that results in drying of mucosal tract, hypertension, nasal tumors, and also, due to consumption of certain drugs, smoking, and alcohol.
There has been a steady rise in incidence of heart-related disorders leading to hypertension and high blood pressure in the recent past. Hypertension is one of the major causes of epistaxis and the increase in its prevalence is expected to be one of the major factors driving growth of the global epistaxis market. For instance, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2019, 1.13 billion people worldwide suffered from hypertension.
