A ventilator is used to provide breathing support to patients. Ventilators that are designed for use in neonates are called neonatal ventilators. Preterm neonates are infants that are born at gestational age < 35 weeks. While neonates are newborn infants under 28 days of age. During the first 28 days of line, the child is at the highest risk. Sick or premature babies are often not able to breathe properly on their own. Hence, in order to provide them with oxygen, and remove carbon dioxide, neonate ventilators are used. This process is also called artificial respiration. There is a wide variety of neonatal ventilators available in the market each with a unique set of properties and settings. Careful assessment of the infant's breathing pattern, chest movement, respiratory rate, and oxygenation should be monitored each time ventilator parameters are adjusted. These ventilators can be invasive or non-invasive.

For instance, on March 23, 2023, Inspiration Healthcare Group plc, a U.K.-based manufacturer of medical technology, announced the launch of an extension to its range of neonatal ventilators. These are new variants of the SLE6000, which facilitate precise, controlled ventilation for critically ill infants. The variants are SLE6000H, which includes powerful high-frequency oscillation, which actively controls pressure, volume, and frequency; SLE6000C includes full specification invasive and non-invasive modes, while SLE6000N provides a suite of non-invasive, multi-mode respiratory support for less sick babies and those transitioning from respiratory support, enabling more important skin to skin contact between parents and baby. The products have been launched in the U.K., where they will be sold directly and to selected international distributors.
